It is hard to face any obstacle when you don’t have all the facts. A life of addiction is a life of suffering in chains. The keys to break free of the chains is to start with HOPE and PERSEVERANCE. Hope, the belief that these challenges and conditions can be overcome, is the foundation of recovery. The process of recovery is highly personal and there is no cookie cutter method to achieving it. Recovery is a path marked by continual growth and improvement in one’s health and wellness that may involve setbacks. Because setbacks are a natural part of life, perseverance becomes a key component of recovery.
At the Duck House we recognize addiction as a medical disease. As defined by the Diagnostics and Statistical Manual 5: Addiction is a complex condition, a brain disease that is manifested by compulsive substance use despite harmful consequences. Individuals with addiction, severe substance use disorder, have an intense focus on using a certain substance(s), such as alcohol or drugs, to the point that it takes over their life. Addiction is not a moral failing and addicts are not weak willed people who just make bad choices.
With the disease model of addiction in mind, it is our belief that the only way to treat addiction is through compassion and connection. Addiction takes the individual further and further away from who they once were and who they want to be. It destroys family relationships, hope and self-esteem. We believe that the pathway out is through building an internal connection between what was lost and what the individual wants for their future. The most important aspect of treatment is that it is done collaboratively so that as the client, you have ownership towards the path of recovery.
